...through Anna Bodine's plan...
So, the other night we had a married couple in our branch over for diner. He is a professor at the University of Guam (UOG). After dazzling him with my hi-tech lifestyle, he made the off-hand remark that if I only had a Masters he could offer me a job. I'm sure it was mostly in jest, but that moment something stuck in Anna's mind.
Anna has now decided that it's time for me to get my MBA. Ironically, I had just barely paid off my student loans from my bachelor's degree last week. Time to crawl back into debt, I guess.
It may seem that Anna is solely thinking long term and preparing us for financial security down the road. Well, yes, that too. But tonight her true and foremost motive came out.
Anna is supposed to be getting her Certified Public Accountant (CPA) credentials. She should be half way done and have 2 of the 4 tests completed. Rather, she's only studied a handful of the times she said she would and is not even starting to apply for the testing dates. She quickly gets bored after minutes of studying and really can't seem to motivate herself. I've tried everything I can think of to motivate her. Cooking, dish washing, free time, plenty of space, even bribes have not done the trick. She's has asked me to sit there and watch her study, but not talk or move because that will distract her. No matter how much you love someone, that gets old, real fast.
As soon as this whole MBA idea came up, she's had a quickness in her step. Every day she spends five minutes on the subject with my trying to push it along. Today she pulled out a stack of books to prepare me for the GMAT entrance exam that I have to take first. She got my chair all ready and couldn't wait for me to sit there and study with her. To her dismay, I had some things to do and no sense of urgency for the test, so I declined the offer to start. She then went back to unmotivated, reluctant study-girl.
This whole time, all she seems to be able to focus on are ways to get me to study with her. I think that if I were to study in the UOG library, she'd probably have me put off the MBA. I hope she actually finishes her CPA by the time I get my Masters. If not, I'll have no choice but to become "Dr. Jared." Could you imagine me a doctor? "Please, call me Dr. Jared." Now that's an odd sounding combination of words...

Present President...
I recently was informed that Brigham Young University Hawaii has FINALLY decided to give the Shumways the boot and put someone else in as the president of the University. I only wish that would have been done long ago, when I could have been there to benefit from it.
Back when I was a student at BYU-H, I wrote this blog that got lost in the shuffle and never made it's way to the spotlight. With news of Shumway's release, I felt it was once again timely.
Ok, so I admit, those are some harsh and accusatory words. Thus, they were never officially published on their own merits. But I am glad to hear that he is finally setting his back on BYU-H to make way for fresh life to invigorate a school that I fear is becoming jaded and stagnant.
This calling of a new president is not really an issue that relates to me much any more. But as an alumni, I am glad to welcome Steven C. Wheelwright and wish him luck in taking my alma mater to bigger and better places.

This may not relate to you if you are not a student here at BYU-Hawaii. In some respects, this will not affect you even if you do attend BYU-H.
I recently got an email to my campus address with the heading "President's Message".
Here are some highlights:
"Dear university ohana,
If you see the Shumways carrying suitcases across the campus, don't worry! They are not leaving the university. They are, however, changing residences.
...This move is necessitated by personal circumstances for the Shumways and is not an indication they are leaving the University. The President says, he'll be with us for the foreseeable future as long as the Brethren desire his service.
For convenience, it was decided to simply exchange houses with Mike and Nancy Bliss who are living in the Naniloa Loop home at the moment..."
I was not surprised to see that the Shumways were leaving campus. As far as I can tell, they checked out emotionally about the same time I checked in.
When I got in trouble for wearing a costume on April Fool's Day one year, it was Shumway that said he wanted my issue to be followed up on (but he never met me personally). Other than that, I have felt nothing but abandonment from the Shumways. I have tried on occasions to schedule meetings with the President that need his involvement. No luck. I know of people who have tired to do some great things on campus, to be shot down abruptly by Shumway.
Is he evil? No. Is he compassionate? Who knows? Does he appear to have lost his commitment to the school and a genuine interest in campus? You bet!
Myself and other friends of mine from campus have speculated that he only held onto the position to be here long enough to be the center of recognition for the Golden Jubilee, the celebration of 50 years of BYU-H. But that's over, and we haven't seen him since his token appearances during the festivities. How long till he leaves officially and not just practically?
How can he effectively run the school if he is never here? He is already a member of the seventy. Now he recently has been called to be a temple president in Tonga. Hopefully, this is a sign that his move off campus is one step closer to getting him permanently replaced by someone ready, willing and able to be a present president for us.

After His Lucky Grades...
My grades for the Fall 2005 term have come in. I busted my butt to get good grades this last semester. I think I put more time and money into my grades this semester than any previous. I also think that I have killed more than my fair share of trees as well (thank you, English 315).
One class that has, and continues, to complicate the grade issues is IS307, AKA Systems Analysis and Design. One day the teacher took about 40+ minutes to explain his grading rubric. He wrote on the board a bunch of symbols. There was a check, a "+", a "-" and a0. Apparently, we are to decipher a check+, a regular check, a check- , and a 0 into some coherent grading system. He explained that a check+ was basically an "A". A regular check was a "B". A check- was a "C". and 0 meant "F". So, I bet you are thinking the same thing I was. "Uh, excuse me for being a cynic, but, if each of those is simply a different way of meaning the standard grading system, why not just use that standard grading system?"
He didn't like my answer. He explained that each symbol can only be interpreted as such grade equivalents and are not those. He then went on explaining how they were tallied and such. By this time my eyes and the 36 eyes of the other 18 students were glazed over. Next thing I knew I saw him in green shorts. Then a green pipe hat with a large green four leaf clover sticking out of it. He was singing about our new lucky grading system. We had blue diamonds, pink hearts, yellow moons, orange stars, green clovers, purple horseshoes, pots of gold, rainbows and red balloons; each tallied up with his rainbow magic to give us our lucky grades. "Aw, yer always after me lucky grades..."
Including his class, my semester's grades are as follows:
Now, if you do the math, his lucky green clovers are worth nothing. His overly confusing grading system that he couldn't even figure out made it impossible to have our grades in by the time they were due. I am pretty darn sure I got his Pot of Gold, also known as an "A", but I have no way to be sure.
I might make fun of him, but he is actually a very nice guy. I enjoy his company as a person. However, if you ever get this same teacher, I recommend you bring along a lucky rabbit's foot to rub during his lectures.

Ridiculous Rubric...
I made a post about a month a go that spoke of a test I took in 28 minutes where others spent 2 hours. I finally got my results.
Needless to say, I am not happy.
The reason I am not happy is not just due to my poor grade, although that is part of it. What makes me mad is that most of my answers were totally correct, but I still did not get full credit for them. Why is that, you may ask? Because the teacher had a surprise grading rubric that she informed us of AFTER we had already taken the test!
The way she graded our tests was as follows: She reads the question. Then reads our answer and gives one point for every thing mentioned in the answer that can be justified. If the person put down 10 things that could be justified, they got 10 points. If another person, such as I, were to put one or two things down (that were totally correct and appropriate responses), then he only got 1 or 2 points. Therefore, I got somewhere in the 60% rage.
After taking a class for a few months that emphasizes brevity and conciseness, I would have expected being rewarded for showing such skills. But nay, my teacher in her infinite wisdom decided to punish the skills she was endeavoring to teach.
I spoke with her about the situation and she laughed, "Well, you only spent 28 minutes on the test."
"Yes, but that is not the issue. The issue is that You gave me less than full credit for a correct answer based on a rubric you determined while grading. Don't you see a problem with that?"
She didn't.
Arrrg!!!

Go Home, Ha'ole...
"Na, Na, I like ha'oles, but. You ha'oles are alright. You are welcome to come. Come! Come! Just don't forget to go back home!"
- Bu La'ia
I do love Hawaii. It is a wonderful place. Granted, paradise has a price. It's expensive. The bugs are everywhere. I miss air conditioning. You usually have poorly built housing. Local TV is deplorable. Your family is far away. And worst for most new people to the islands, you don't fit in.
See, the locals call the while folk that come here "Ha'ole" which literally interpreted means "Without the breath of God." It originally was used to mean a foreigner to this land. With time (and given the fact that the white man was the one that came and conquered) the phrase has now been adapted to mean all white folk crackers such as myself.
I came here knowing none of that. I had no clue about Hawaii was at all. Considering that my dad served here and lived here after, you'd think that I'd know more. All I knew was that the Big Island was called "Hawaii" and that Honolulu was on the Main Island (I forgot Oahu). I even got Malibu and Maui mixed up all the time. To quickly alieve me of this burden of ignorance the Lord in his infinite wisdom sent me to Pahoa Hawaii south of the bigger city Hilo. It was in the sticks. Pahoa means "Dagger" and that was fitting that the small dirty town had plenty of knife fights. It was also smack dab in the center of Pokololo country. That, for my ha'ole friends is Marijuana. "Poko" is cigarette and "lolo" is crazy. Cute name, eh?
None the less, I loved it. Our plumbing was not like you know. We had a big pool in the backyard. It was full of rain water. We had to shower in it, brush out teeth with it, wash our dishes in it and do our laundry in it. The water ran down from the roof's gutters into it. After it sat long enough, the water would flow through and around a spool of yarn as the water filter. Everything with time had a blue tint to match the color of the slowly decaying blue plastic liner of the catchment tank. We had to go the public water hole to get drinking water. I loved it.
Pahoa Plumbing
It didn't take long of living there and with the most local of locals to pick up the pigeon dialect and basic Hawaiian words. Due to constant reinforcement, I took a fondness of the food with me as well.
This beats any oven you'll see today
The more I talked the talk and walked the walk, I felt more and more like I belonged. In no time, Hawaii became a second home to me. Nothing has ever changed.
I then left for a period of time. I had a family to get back to and a wife to meet (well, I was more optimistic then). I had my run of Arizona. I was used to new things, green lands and fun new cultures. I wanted out of my work-a-day grind and had yet to meet a girl worth my ire. I prayed and felt good about returning to my aina away from my aina.
I came back to Hawaii as a stranger. I moved to Laie, one place I had almost never been in two years of traveling the islands. The only person I knew there was my old bishop and then current teacher, Bishop Furuto. I had to start almost from scratch.
Luckily for me, I did not have the same problem as most newbies to the island. I knew what it meant when someone called me a mahu (not that it was common). I knew that Lomi Salmon was not just salsa. I knew that you don't disrespect Braddah IZ around locals bigger than you. I knew that just because Eddie would go, I probably shouldn't walk around Wahiawa alone at night. In a way, I still felt like a local to some degree. But I wasn't.
It didn't take long to realize that my old tricks were not cute any more. If I was to try to speak some Hawaiian word and practice using it in context the members of the ward laughed, corrected me and were glad to have me as person interested in their culture. If I made a taboo statement in ignorance, I was politely corrected and quickly forgiven. As a missionary, I was a welcomed guest and pleasant company.
When I returned I was merely a ha'ole. Last semester I was talking some of the pigeon that I knew (I get da kine words, I just need fo work on da accent, but.) I discovered that a local who was listening was a bit upset at me. He felt like I was a poser. Also, a friend's boyfriend who is a local spoke quite disparaging words behind my back for my attempts at fitting in. The bottom line is, when I came back, I was just another ha'ole who was welcomed to spend my money and go. I wasn't cute, I was insulting.
I was talking with my friends the other day. JD and Scott who served in Hong Kong spend some good time with the Hong Kong gang. The RM's who were in Korea all join the Korean club or date a Korean girl or never miss an opportunity to eat with them in the much applauded caf. But for some reason, I don't sit at the "local table" or chill that much with locals. Well, to be fair, I have some local friends. Carrera, Kiapo, Lehua, Niki, Nicole and others I know pretty well like Hi'ilei whom I knew from my first area, Pahoa. But I don't make too many new friends and I know these locals because they hang out with my other mainland friends.
I feel like I understand and can relate to the people here. I also feel that with many of them, they can't understand or relate to me. If not that, they don't try to. I admit, I am the visitor to their aina (land) but I have migrated. I came to live here, not to just go to school here. BYU-Hawaii was the idea I had to afford living here, I would have come with or without school. I may never be a true local, I may never really want to be a genuine one. I may be considered a Ha'ole forever, even if I live out the rest of my days here. This is my home. I love it here. It has it’s ups and downs. I look forward to leaving once in a while for better TV commercials, good Mexican food and the fun of my family, but this is my home too. And I will live here. I belong here. I’m new, and I’m learning, but this is my home too now. This ha’ole didn’t forget to go home, this ha’ole is home.

Repetition, Repittion, Repittion...
"More popular than the Celestial Home Care Omnibus, better selling than 53 More Things to Do in Zero Gravity, and more controversial than Oolon Colluphid's trilogy of philosophical blockbusters: Where God Went Wrong, Some More of God's Greatest Mistakes, and Who Is This God Person, Anyway?"

Jared's "Lost In Laie" has now rolled over the "1,000 visits" mark. The counter was started less than three months ago and the blog has been in existence for over 11 months, so it's been a considerable amount more! That probably makes this the second most popular non-porn internet site (1,295,237,567 over all).
I'd like to thank myself for making this possible and of course the little people...hmm...now I'm starting to repeat my 75th Blog Post. And one thing I've learned not to do is repeat myself in any blogs. No, I never repeat myself...never...never shall I repeat...

Daily Report...
You dont want to end up with a guy like me, I'm a loner...a rebel...
-Pee Wee Herman Pee Wee Herman's Big Adventure
I wanted to try out for the next school play, a farce by Molier. The is the same guy who did Tartuffe. It was funny, but I don't know about this one. I assume that it will be good. I asked my dorm mom is she would mind. She didn't seem to hot on the idea. She didn't say it, but basically it was no. I have had a heck of a summer and my time here thus far hasn't been all that hot either. So, I felt that i needed this creative outlet. At lunch today i was talking with some friends who are trying out: Jeff, Shem, Lisa, Erika. Jeff, also an RA, was talking about how the rehearsals are from 3-6pm. And not on wed. when i cant be there due to RA class and i wouldn't have to be there for every rehearsal. so i fully defied authority, signed up and then looked over the supplied monologues. I was auditioning only hours later. Little did i know, he wanted to see us do all three monologues on the page. I had the one almost down and did the other 2 as a cold read. I did surprising well on the anger fight one. A little too well. I think my sordid summer and past few months helped supply some fodder there. I was yelling and screaming as well as i could. I wasn't just loud, i felt it. I really felt the anger and hate. It was nice to emote again. I think i did better on the cold reads than the one i tried to memorize. After the lethargic experience of having a mock fight with air, I almost want the part that does that scene.
So, tonight i have what i think counts as a date. Ya, weird, huh? I didn't think it was a big deal, but now i want to back out. I figure i just need to try dating again. I sort of dated Steph for a time. It was nice, but with the huge distance, it just didn't seem to click right. I don't know. If she lived in AZ or I lived in Vegas, thing probably would have been different. Point being, I want to be in a relationship again. I think a good portion of what i missed so much about Fei was the relationship and not her. Don't get me wrong i did actually feel for her, but i was holding on to her when i knew i had to let go. I think part of that was that i had never had a girlfriend, or a hope of one, prior and didn't want to lose it if i could help it. So, i have also been leery of getting in a serious relationship. this girl i am hanging out with is not one that i am actually interested in. Not for a relationship anyway. But i think this will be just a friend thing. I have this habit of flirting with girls that i can just because I don't usually have anything happen anyway. I dont mean to. Well, sometimes i do, when i am interested, but doubt it will happen. This girl, she is nice, but i am not interested, she is just nice. This is about just getting out, not getting a relationship. If the right girl shows up in front of my face, than i am sure i will feel a lot more ready for some serious lovin'. Well, this got long. And now i digress.

Heaven Is...
There is a catchy song on the soundtrack to "Malcom In The Middle" (my favorite half-hour comedy, non-cartoon) called "heaven is a half-pipe". Today, i learned that to be false. The truth is, heaven is sleeping until you wake up on your own free will. I did that today. I was supposed to wake up at 6am and get ready for my lame exercise class where I was to run a mile and a half. But last night i ran into Jayce (J.C.). She opened up my eyes, i saw the sign. She is taking the internet version of it. It is 2 credits, not just the one i get, and she doesn't have to go to class 2 times a week. She doesn't have to meet with the class to play stupid mandatory games and she don't have to run the lame mile and a half. She has the same tests i do, and still is supposed to do the same workout journal. Over all, it boils down to this: she has less work and less exercise, more free time and more credit for it. Sign me up! Alas, too late to sign up for that class. So what? I'm just going to drop that lame class and have one less credit. It's only loosing one stupid credit that takes up 2 class periods a week and 20 min of working out every day. How can that be only one credit? So this morning. I woke up on my own free will at 7:18am. I looked at those red pulsating LDC lines that make up the number and let out a sigh of relief. Then, I knew bliss once again as i slowly rolled back over, turning my face on my imitation quartz time piece, and hit the 'snooze' in my head...

Good Sign of a Bad Day...
Ah, a good sign of a bad day. Last night, I was testing to see if some files on my computer were corrupted by attempting to play them. I started a movie "Billy Maddison". My roommate saw that and thought i was starting to watch it. So, I let it run while i took a shower and got ready for bed. I couldn't use the computer for my journal writing or email or homework, so i laid on my bed and watched it too. I fell asleep (i was tired). I came to just as the credits were rolling. I shut it all down and went to bed. I woke up at 7:50am on my own power. I realized that i forgot to set my alarm. Seeing how i have a class at 8, this makes things difficult. The good thing about living on campus is that it literally takes 2 min from bed to seat in class. I got dressed quickly and was in the good ole' GCB 140. I sat down and looked at the guy next to me. It was the guy who I home taught with last semester. Was he in my class? I never saw him before. I spoke up. "So, you're in my class?" "I think you're in MY class." It was CS201, it was Bro. Colton in the front of the classroom. But i checked my schedule just to make sure. Yup, that was the right class, at 11am. So i realized at 8 i was supposed to be in the classroom right next door, GCB150. Ahw. I quickly ran over there to find that they were engaged in a fun looking quiz. I took one from the teacher and sat down. Once we finished, he said, "This quiz was more of a way to see who would be on time. If you were on time, give yourselves an 'A', otherwise, a 'B'." I don't think my poor story will help me any.
Besides that, classes are just like usual. Pointless and filled with busy work. Ironically, most of my work is also filled with busy work. Today my dorm mom must be busy herself. She hasn't come in to find stupid little things for me to do yet. I shouldn't type that, I'm sure she can sense complacently from a mile.
The other night, I was working the night shift which should end by midnight. With five min to go, Mom walks in and asks that we go through the entire list, which is about 200 boys. When it is well past midnight-15, i ask if i can go since i have an exercise class at 7am and i work the morn shift. By 12:30, i was finally getting ready for bed.

Class day one...
Ya, it was...well...class. Ya know. School would be so much more fun if only those pesky classes didnt get in the way.
Today i was livid in one of my classes. It was the arbitrary P.E. class. I hate those classes. I hated them in grade school, i hated them in junior high, and high school. Why did i think in would enjoy them any more when I was in college? Well, i didnt really think i would. Its a core class i have to take. ya, that sucks. I figured i could just take it. When i get to the room, i find a young spry guy who seems like he might be cool. His name is Jared even. But sad expirence has only taught me that everybody else with the name of Jared is evil. The brother of Jared was good, but Jared...well....sub-par. Then there was that supid subway Jared. Ya, he sure progressed the name. So this jared goes thru the rules and class outline. Unlike most P.e. teachers, he saw it fit not to greade us on effort or improvement, he acctually thought it best to have us run a mile and a half and tell us where we fit in the "scientivically determined" ideal scale for us. If we hit par (i guess thats the word of the day), then an A. anything else, less. Same with bench presses, pushups, situps, etc. So, the jist is that out effort, medical condition or history. There is a reason i majored in COMPUTER GEEKDOM instead of Muscle Brain. I dont find it fair to have my accidemic standing suffer due to my phisical performance not meeting the criteria of some over educated scientists who probably couldnt make thier own quota. As soon as i was done with my classes i promply went to my counelor and switched to another teacher on a different day. I would drop the class altogether, but like i said, it is a core. I also droped it due to the fact that I have a class before it on one side of the campus, then i have that class on the other. I only have one hour to dress out, run, sweat and do all of those fun things, get back into the shower, change again and make it to my next class (institute) on the exact oposite side of campus and sit next to hotties who will i am sure wonder why i smell like i have just been running in circles in muggy tropical heat and look disgurntled for it as if i couldntl even get a passing grade on it. But that would never happen anyway.
Now i have that same class, different teacher, at 8 am. But no class after it. I can live with that. so i saved myself a semester i know i would not enjoy.
I did acually enjoy walking around and seeing all of my firends back today. Well, not ALL of my friends back, but my friends who did come back. I found out that many of them are engaged. And some i cant even say yet. I promised I wouldnt. I cant belive that i have to keep that a secret to my own blog, which, in case you cant tell yet, is now my journal entry for the day too. Why not? I just cant put the real good stuff in here. I have to cut and paste this and add the juicy stuff later. SPeaking of which, it's time to do that....
